Pinterest 101 – If You “Like” Us, “Pin” Us!

pinterest.comAre you lost for great ideas on home decorating, cooking, style, and more? Would you like to connect with others who share a common interest? A website called Pinterest is the place for you, especially for those who are DIY-savvy. At Pinterest.com, you can create a bulletin board to post things you have found online and absolutely love. You can also view other people’s bulletin boards and pin what you see that you like, and they may even pin your ideas to their bulletin board. Here is how it works:

  • In order to become a member on Pinterest.com, you need to send a request for an invite to become a member. After anywhere from a few days, a week, or even longer, you will receive an invite to join Pinterest.
  • Next, you begin pinning your ideas to your bulletin board, which you will name when you sign on. On your bulletin board you can pin your thoughts, ideas, and images of things you would like to share with others on the site.
  • From there, you can begin browsing at other bulletin boards and repin onto your board what somebody else has pinned, and vice versa – they can repin your ideas on their boards.

Many people have used Pinterest, a virtual pinboard, to plan their wedding, decorate their homes, and even organize their favorite recipes. According to Pinterest, their mission is to connect people from all over the world with ideas and concepts they find interesting, whether it be a favorite book, decorating idea, style idea, or recipe. The company believes their site has something for everyone, and hopes that you will find a common bond with someone else’s bulletin board thus creating a community united by shared interests and ideas.

There are a few guidelines when pinning on Pinterest, beginning with the concept of being nice. You may not like every bulletin board you come across, or the ideas someone else has pinned, but they would like to remind you to be respectful when posting comments and having conversations with others on Pinterest.

Also, in order to make your pins more useful for others, you should post a link back to the original source. You can help others do the same, particularly when you notice they have failed to do this. Unfortunately, for many who would like to, self-promotion is not acceptable at Pinterest. However, you can post a photo of a wall mural you have created and are proud of, but this should not be used as the sole purpose of all your pins.

Furthermore, questionable or offending content is never permitted at Pinterest. If you come across this type of content, you should report them by clicking on the “Report Content” link. As the site continues to grow, they would like your feedback on the site in general. If you have any comments on how Pinterest can be better or more effective, speak up – you never know; they may decide to implement your idea!

So, what do you think? We encourage you to give it a try and even do us a teeny-weeny favor and pin your favorite My Wonderful Walls wall murals today!
