It’s very rewarding that we have so many customers that come to us for a second room mural for another child or for a “big kid” room as their child grows. We never take it for granted that we have such loyal customers. One such family is the Lackenbys in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. We originally met Jackie and her husband when they were looking for a farm themed room mural for their son. When pregnant with daughter Hollie, the pair came to us again for forest themed wall stencils so they could create a gender neutral nursery mural that could grow with their baby. Once the couple found out they were expecting a little girl they were pleased that the forest nursery mural could have some feminine touches to make it more girly. Our Forest Friends Wall Stencil Kit met their needs just fine and helped create a warm, inviting nursery for baby Hollie, now almost one!
Jackie told us that they chose stencils in order to have something more permanent. She was concerned that once the kids were a little older, they may peel the stickers. She also liked the idea of being able to pick her own colors for the room using stencils rather than stickers. Mom and dad wouldn’t necessarily call themselves artistic but think both of their childrens’ bedrooms look fantastic. Even though they used our self-adhesive stencil kit, Jackie found she was still able to add her own twist with features on the face/body as well as planning the arrangement of the pictures etc. Mom and dad didn’t vary too much on the standard mural kit but did make the animals a little different - tufts of hair here and there, different shades and colors, free hand work on their eyes etc. They also created the signpost name by hand. (You can now purchase a personalized stencil with your kit.) Additionally, they varied the height on the trees so they all wouldn’t look same. All in all, Jackie says the room took about 6 days to complete.
Her advice for first timers? “Plan for it to take longer than you expect! Be prepared, have many different brushes from tiny thin ones to outline/touch up at the end. Also purchase lots of makeup sponges to dab the paint - dabbing is better than brushing. Plan your layout, decide where you want things to go, and don't over/under fill any area of the walls.” She did mention to us that it took a little longer than they thought, in part because of a paint spilling incident. Her only complaint? “My only issue is that our walls weren't "perfect" enough before starting. There were a few uneven patches and lumps/bumps that I wish we had had fixed. Make sure your prep is perfect!”
Jackie says she and her husband just enjoyed knowing how beautiful the room is going to look, and being able to give that gift to their children. This mom of two says her hobbies are her children and she doesn’t have a lot of time for anything else! It was very important for mom and dad to create this special and magical place for their kids to call their own, rather than just a plain "run of the mill" room. Jackie says they will remember their first bedrooms for the rest of their lives! Something which makes it all the more special.
